Leaves 30-60cm long (dwarfer forms have been found), the stalks densely brown-scaly, the blades elliptic to narrowly ovate in outline, bipinnate and slender-pointed. Pinnules subrhomboid to ovate, 7-12mm long, shallowly to pinnately lobed. North America and the Andean region of South America to Tierra de Fuego and the Falkland Islands, in forest, rock crevices and stream banks. P.m. var. scopulinum, see P. scopulinum.
