Bistorta vivipara). Tufted perennial from a short thick rhizome. Stems slender, erect, unbranched, sparingly leafy. Leaves narrowly lanceolate, 2-8cm in length, long-stalked. Flowers 3-4mm long, white, in shm terminal spikes, 5-10cm long, with purplish bulbils at the base, summer. Circumpolar and on hills and mountains farther south, in grassland and amongst rocks. Interesting as a true native British alpine, but not worthy of rock garden space.
