Tufted procumbent perennial to 9cm tall by 18-40cm across with branched stems from a thick yellow rootstock. Leaves linear to narrowly spathulate 3-12mm long. Inflorescence a compact rounded head of up to twelve flowers surrounded by the upper leaves. Flowers 4-5.5mm long, whitish to inky blue, summer in the wild. Chile and Argentina from the central cordillera through Andean Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego. In sandy dwarf steppe plant communities sometimes among Azorella hummocks, from sea level to 2500m depending upon altitude. P. soliieri is similar but has fleshy ovate leaves and heads of up to five flowers. Chile, northern central cordillera.
