Botanical Description

biennial or perennial, usually solitary rosetted, but perennials may have two or more. Leaves pressed flat to the ground, 3-10cm or more long, lanceolate to narrowly so, toothed or pinnately lobed, occasionally bipinnatifid, glabrous or hairy. Scapes as long as leaves, decumbent to ascending. Spikes green and insignificant. Coasts of Europe east to Poland and the Crimea, also inland in western Europe mainly in dry sandy soils. Hardly worthy of cultivating, though the starfish-likeleaf-rosettes have a certain appeal.
