A tree of 10m. or more but slow-growing. Leaves crowded, in fives, 2-4cm long, usually deep green with small beads of white resin. Cones ovoid-cylindrical 4-9cm long, spiny. Western U.S.A., Rocky Mountains. A handsome tree for the large rock garden, but in twenty to thirty years gets too big.
P.a. var. longaeva is similar but the leaves seldom have resin beads and the cone scales have awns, not spines. Native to the high, dry White Mountains of Arizona where specimens over 4000 years old still exist.
