Botanical Description

Overwintering as a bud. Leaves oblong to somewhat obovate, 2-4.5cm long, light butter-green. Flowers 1.5-2.2cm long, occasionally more, violet, usually with a small white patch in the throat, on stems 7-15cm or more in height, early to late summer. Europe including the British Isles, North Africa (Morocco), northern Asia and North America, in bogs, wet heaths and rocks. P.v. var. alpicola has elliptic leaves and flowers up to twice as large and grows in the Pyrenees, Alps and Apennines at 1200-2300m.
