Tufted woody-based perennial forming bushy tufts or cushions 10-20cm high, or in rich soil much more. Leaves linear to oblong-lanceolate, 4-8cm long. Flowers about 2cm across, purple to pink or white, often with a dark striped eye, in clusters of three to twenty, spring. Colorado to eastern California and northern Arizona plus a separate smaller area in southern New Mexico and adjacent Arizona, on scrub covered rocky and gravelly slopes at altitude.
