Botanical Description

with rhizomatous stems creeping at or below ground level and sending up more or less erect stems 30-60cm in height, sometimes to twice this. In the wild at least, the creeping stems often climb up mossy tree trunks. Leaves crowded, alternate, 2-4cm long, narrowly oblong, with rolled margins, stiffly leathery, deep glossy green above, glaucous beneath. Flowers solitary at the stem tips, pendent, rose-crimson, the three petals forming a slender, elegant bell 4-6cm long, summer to autumn. Fruit a brownish-green berry, 1-1.4cm long (seldom reported on cultivated plants). Fuegia north to the Chilean Lake District and Argentina around the lakes at latitude 50°, in moist Nothofagus forest.
