Rosettes loose, in tufts from a perennial woody rootstock. Leaves 3-10cm long formed of up to eleven entire, ovate to lanceolate leaflets densely coated wit h adpressed glossy, silvery hairs. Flowers tubular-campanulate 4-7mm long, clear lilac to dirty lavender with exserted stamens and style, borne in dense, branched, scorpioid cymes on erect to decumbent stems 5-30cm in length, spring and summer or later. Southern U.S.A. to Fuegia in sandy and gravelly soils in steppe and allied communities from sea level to 5000m depending upon latitude. Attractive only in its clear coloured, compact forms.
