Botanical Description

Low hummock-forming in cultivation (usually mat-like in the wild), to 10cm high by 25cm across in about a dozen years. Leaves rosetted, oblanceolate, to 2cm long, three-veined, bluish-green above, pinkish lavender-tinted and sometimes silky hairy beneath. Racemes above the leaves, 4-7.5cm long, the creamy-white flowers with thirty-five to forty stamens, early summer. Washington State in the Olympic mountains on cliffs and steep rocky slopes.
