Tufted perennial 2-8cm tall, producing one or more neat rosettes from a thick rootstock. Leaves 1.5-8.5cm long, either linear and conspicuously fringed with long white bristles or pinnately divided into five to many pairs of tightly packed linear lobes, each one white bristle-tipped. Flowerheads solitary, one per rosette, narrowly bell-shaped, the seven to fifteen florets having cream, pink or blue rays 5-10mm long. Chile and Argentina, from the northern central cordilleras to Tierra del Fuego, in exposed habitats from sea level to 4300m, depending on latitude.
