Stems 30-100cm tall. Leaves usually strongly serrate, to 10cm long, cauline leaves well-developed, elliptic to subcordate. Inflorescence of open, confluent verticillasters. Flowers blue with a paler throat and darker guide lines, 1.5-2.3cm long. In open or often wooded, sometimes rocky places, from the foothills to moderate elevations in the mountains and Idaho and Oregon. Hybridizes freely with P. albertinus in the wild. Open, airy effect in the garden. Easily grown.
