Stems 15-40cm tall. Leaves entire, all cauline, lanceolate to lance-linear, 2-6cm long. Flowers blue-purple, whitish within with darker guidelines, 1.6-2.3cm long. Dry, open places, often with sagebrush, from the plains and foothills to moderate elevations in the mountains in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and extreme northern Colorado at 1400-2300m. The north-central Nevada (populations which have been called P. lineolatus) are somewhat shorter with smaller leaves. Not in cultivation.
