Generally 40-80cm tall. Flowers to 2.5cm long, pale violet with white throat, mouth nearly or quite closed by the arched base of the lower lip. Dry woods and fields, Quebec and Maine to Michigan, Wisconsin, Virginia and Kentucky. P.h. 'Pygmaeus' is 6-10cm tall. Easy and rewarding. Good purple winter leaf colour.
