Stems 25-70cm tall. Leaves linear, usually fasciculate, 2-4.5cm long. Flowers rose-violet with blue lobes, 2.5-3.5cm long. Dry hillsides, below 1650m. in chaparral, foothill woodlands and yellow pine forest in the Coast Ranges and Sierran foothills of California. P.h. var. purdyi has leaves rarely fascicled, puberulent throughout. Superlative rock garden plant. Widely cultivated.
