shrublet 20-60cm tall. Leaves often opposite, more or less sharply toothed, up to 6cm long and 2.5cm wide. Flowers dull white, sometimes washed with lavender, 8-20mm long. Dry, open, often rocky places, from the lowlands to moderate or occasionally high elevations in the mountains of Washington, Montana and Wyoming, to California, Nevada, and Utah. Off-white flowers turning brown with age give this plant a reputation as 'dusty deustus'. A highly variable and widespread taxon that may contain plants of horticultural merit.
