Clump-forming perennial from a thickened rhizome, 20-35cm in height. Basal leaves more or less rosetted, orbicular to kidney-shaped, pubescent, 3-6cm across. Flowers 2.5cm long, composed of two large, upper, carmine-magenta petals and three minute lower ones, in umbels of five to fifteen, summer. Turkey and Syria in the cooler parts of the Syrian Desert. The hardiest species, standing all but the worst winters, but resenting too much wet.
