those on the stems in whorls of four, pinnatifid with ovate, crenate lobes. Flowers purple-red, occasionally pink or white, about 1.8cm long, in short, headlike spikes, mid to late summer. Arctic Russia to the mountains of central and southern Europe, in tundra and damp grassland; often abundant. [Pl.340].
