Stems 25-45cm in height, hairless. Leaves 6-12cm long, pinnatifid with toothed segments. Flowers almost 2cm long, pale yellow, in spike-like racemes, summer to autumn. P.p. var. purpurea has purple flovwers. North-western North America; Rocky Mountains to Idaho and Montana south to New Mexico and Arizona.
