Botanical Description

Stem 30-60cm in height. Leaves up to 15cm in length, pinnatifid, with sharply toothed, narrowly lanceolate segments. Flowers 1.2-1.8cm long, red-purple, the upper lip tapering to a very slender, upwards arching beak, in moderately dense spikes, mid to late summer. Labrador to British Columbia south to the mountains of California and New Mexico, in mountain coniferous forest, meadows and wet places up to 3700m. in the south of its range. An intriguing species, each flower like an elephant's head complete with trunk and ears.
