Botanical Description

Stoutly rhizomatous, to 10cm tall in bloom, then to 30cm Basal leaves broadly spathulate to narrowly oblong, 4-10cm long, glabrous to glandular-hairy, wavy margined, entire or toothed. Racemes leafless, corymbose, composed of up to eight 2-2.5cm wide pink, lilac, purple or white flowers, spring. Seed pods are 2-6cm long, siliquas containing conspicuously winged seeds to 5mm long. Circumpolar and mountains farther south, on rocky slopes.

The following species from Asia would be worth investigating: albida, asperrima, beketovii, fruticulosa, lanuginosa, microcarpa, pulvinata, schugnana, stenophylla.
