Basal leaves ovate to triangular-orbicular, cordate, l-5cm long, often red-spotted beneath, on longish stalks. Stems 10-30cm tall with one sessile leaf. Flowers 1.5-2.5cm across, the oval to oblong petals with greenish veins and the staminodes tipped with yellow glands, late summer. Europe, temperate Asia and North America in wet places. Several subspecies and varieties are recognised. Of horticultural note is P.p. var. condensata which has more numerous, somewhat leathery leaves on shorter stalks and larger flowers on stems 5-15cm in height.
