Botanical Description

A very variable tufted perennial, rarely more than 25cm tall. Leaves oblong to lanceolate, pinnately lobed and clothed in dark hairs. The solitary scapose flowers are usually dark yellow, rarely pink or white, 2.5-4cm across. The oval to rounded fruit capsules are covered in dense reddish brown bristles. Widespread on moraines, screes, gravels and stony steppes in Arctic regions from North America and Greenland, to Iceland, Arctic Europe and Arctic Russia.
