Botanical Description

A tufted perennial to 25cm tall in flower, but very variable in the wild, with the stems and flower buds covered in greyish brown hairs. The leaves, 5-12cm long, are all basal and pinnately lobed. The relatively small flowers, 2.5-3.5cm across, are yellow or occasionally orange. The fruit capsule, 4-7mm wide, is adorned with blackish- or reddish-brown bristles. Stony tundra, moraines and screes in Arctic Siberia and western Siberia. Stockier plants, not more than 15cm tall, from Arctic Siberia are sometimes distinguished as P. pulvinatum.
