A rather tall peony with mid-green divided leaves and large, brilliantly scarlet-red erect flowers on rather long stems. AGM as 'Otto Froebel'.
Leaves rather large, mid-green with paler veins, biternately divided into lanceolate, acute divisions, the lower divided to the base. Flowers bowl-shaped, 7-12 cm in diameter, brilliant scarlet-red; outer tepals boat-shaped, greenish, few; anthers yellow and filaments rather slender, pinkish; carpels 1-4, furry, with a long curved stigmatic area. Forest glades in mountainous areas, usually on limestone. Flowers early May in the wild, late May in the UK. Straightforward and persistent in cultivation.
