Tufted to loosely mat-forming, 30-60cm across from a slender woody rootstock. Leaflets obcordate, 1-1.5cm long, usually bright green. Flowers solitary or in twos and threes, buttercup yellow, to 1.5cm long, each petal with a basal zone of short red lines, summer. Washington State to California, in forests up to 600m. Very tolerant of deep shade but best with some sun.
