Botanical Description

ex Torr. & A. Gray. Clump to colony-forming from branching rhizomes, up to 20cm tall but usually less in cultivation. Leaflets broadly obcordate, l-3cm long, usually smooth and rich green with a central grey patch above, glaucous and hairy beneath. Flowers solitary, up to 2cm long, white or pink, often purple-veined. O.r. forma smalliana has flowers to 2cm long with deep rose-purple petals, late spring to early autumn. Washington State to California in Douglas fir and redwood forest. Best in partial shade.
