Botanical Description

Clump to small colony-forming, 3-5cm tall, spreading by scaly rhizomes. Leaflets about ten, narrowly oblanceolate but folded lengthwise and strongly waved, glaucous, often purplish-margined. Flowers solitary, about 2.5cm long, fragrant, lilac-blue, crimson, pink or white with a darker or green centre and veining, but only the violet-blue form seems to be in cultivation. Argentina (Patagonia) on sandy and stony hills up to 200m. Hardy in sheltered sites but an excellent alpine house plant. [Pl.326].
