Botanical Description

ex Hook. (syn. O. compacta, O. bryoides). Firmly mat to hummock-forming up to 30cm across, in the wild often almost stone-hard. Leaves trifoliate in congested tufts, often with a reddish-brown suffusion, each leaflet triangular-cuneate,

22.5 by 1mm. Flowers solitary, almost sessile, 6-8mm long, yellow, northern central cordilleras to Andean mid-Patagonia at the limits of vegetation on stony tops, stable screes and between rocks at 1800-4000m depending upon latitude. Formerly known as O. bryoides and O. compacta, the latter name now used for a distinct species, q.v. [Pl.324].
