Almost stemless rosette-forming perennial, sometimes with a branched crown, up to 10cm tall. Leaves lanceolate, deeply sinuate-pinnatifid, 3-10cm in length. Flowers yellow often ageing red, up to 2.5cm in diameter, summer. California to Washington State, Idaho and Nevada, in open places or amongst pine forest or sagebrush scrub usually where moistish, at 1300-2800m. Perhaps the most reliable of the acaulescent species.
