Superficially like O. nuttallii but leaves grey-hairy, the lower pinnately lobed, and larger flowers which expand more widely. Texas and adjacent Mexico in prairies and by roadsides. O.s. var. childsii (syn. O. herlandieri of some authorities) is smaller and more slender with rose-coloured flowers never more than 4-5cm in diameter. [Pl.300].
