Tufted perennial, the stems more or less decumbent to ascending, 20-60cm long. Leaves usually prominently pinnatifid, sometimes only toothed, 2-4cm long, somewhat hairy. Flowers up to 2cm across, often less, pale yellow to almost white aging reddish, early summer to autumn. O.l. var. grandiflora has flowers 2-3.5cm in diameter and is horticulturally more desirable. South-eastern U.S.A., north to North Dakota and west to Texas, in sandy open habitats.
