Up to 60cm in height, sometimes a little more. Leaves in whorls, ovate to lanceolate, 5cm or more in length. Flowers widely saucer-shaped, usually about four or five but sometimes less, or exceptionally up to ten, 7cm or more across, pink, sometimes very pale, with purple spotting in the centre, the three inner tepals much wider and more or less fringed, summer. Western China, in scrub and forest margins at 3000-3400m. Allied to N. mairei. For N.p. var. farreri, see N. farreri.
