Botanical Description

Glaucous tufted to loose N . uniflora (D. Don) Flaum. Neat loose cushion former, 3-7cm high. Leaves 7-8mm long pinnatisect with spiny side-lobes. Inflorescences solitary, sessile, nestling in the crowns of the shoots. Chile and Argentina, through the central cordillera in mixed dwarf alpine steppe communities on exposed sandy and stony tracts at 2800-4000m. N. looseri always has clusters of a few heads per inflorescence and in particular a prolonged rigid spike-like terminal lobe to its 1-2.7cm long leaves. Chile, Cordillera de Santiago at 2500-3000m.
