Clump to colony-forming perennial to 30cm high spreading by rhizomes. Leaves oblong to lanceolate, 2-5cm long, coarsely wavy toothed and hispidly hairy. Flowers funnel-shaped, 1-1.5cm long, lavender-purple, in dense rounded heads, late summer. Cahfornia, at 23003300m, in pine-juniper woodland and subalpine fellfields where the soil is dryish and sandy.
