Rootstock stout, eventually branching to form a close tuft or hummock of rosettes. Leaves evergreen, lanceolate, 2-7cm long, pinnately cut into triangular lobes, deep semi-lustrous green. Flowers bright yellow, four-petalled, 1.5cm across on short stalks in a cluster from the centre of each rosette, spring to early summer. In open sandy habitats from sea level to 1200m. M.m. 'Fred Hemingway' has finer, larger flowers.
