Widely clump to loosely mat-forming, spreading by elongated rhizomes and slender stolons. Leaves broadly ovate to rounded, subcordate, more or less toothed, with scattered long hairs, 1.5-3.5cm long. Racemes leafless, 15-25cm tall. Flowers greenish-yellow, the petals divided into nine to thirteen filament-like lobes, early to late summer. Eastern Asia and North America south to Washington State and Pennsylvania, in moist woods, on stream banks and bogs, mostly in the mountains.
