ex Sims. Perennial, with a spindle-shaped root and straw-coloured stems 40-60cm tall. Leaves ovate to narrowly so or sometimes rhombic, toothed and often more or less lobed, up to 6cm long. Flowers 2-3cm across, with golden-yellow pointed petals, summer. Illinois to Texas and Mexico, in rocky places and hillsides, up to submontane levels.
