with white-downy erect stems 20-40cm tall. Leaves oblonglanceolate to linear, coarsely wavy-toothed, 4-12cm long. Flowers solitary, subtended by two broad, toothed, white-tipped green bracts, pale cream with reddish veins, 3-6cm across, summer. California and Baja California, in sandy gravelly or rocky ground up to 1350m. M.i. var. megalantha has flowers up to twice as large. Local in California.
