Deciduous monocarp or perennial, allied to M. grandis, 20-60cm tall. Leaves oblanceolate, variable in size, entire, irregularly toothed or shallowly lobed, bristly-hairy, tapering to long stalks. Flowers solitary, nodding, 6-7cm across, purple to sky blue. Nepal to Tibet, on open slopes and amongst scrub at 3300-4500m. A variable species in most of its characteristics: seed should only be saved from the best perennial blue-flowered plants. Needs dryish conditions in winter or liable to rot off.
