Botanical Description

rarely more than 5cm high. Leaves alternate, pinnate, fairly densely borne, with broad semi-membranous sheathing stalks. Blades about 1cm long, divided into seven to nine awl-shaped, dark green semi-glossy leaflets having rolled-under margins. Flowers tiny, petalless, greenish, with red anthers, sessile in the leaf axils followed by pure white, ovoid single-seeded berries 5-8mm long. Ecuador to Patagonia, in the mountains in the north, lowland in the south. Hardy in all but the severest winters.
