ex Pfeiff.) A. Weber. Mat-forming, 3-8cm high by up to 1.5cm or more across in the wild. Stem joints ovoid to almost globular, 1.2-3cm long by 1-1.2cm wide. Main spines l-2cm long, white or rarely yellowish. Flowers 3-4.5cm across, yellow with a silky sheen, late spring to summer. Chile and Argentina, from south of the central valley to the north of Andean Patagonia, in volcanic ashfields in subalpine forest, thin grassland and stony plateaux as a component of a rich alpine flora.
