Botanical Description

Leaves oval to oblong, hairless, to 10cm long, 5cm wide, on stalks to 10cm long. Flowering stems 5-20cm tall with usually two stalkless leaves. Flowers fragrant, 4-6mm across, stamens longer than the petals, in racemes l-4cm long, late spring to summer. Fruit to 5mm, pale red. North-eastern North America, in woodland. Rarely cultivated.
