Rounded bush to about 1m. or more in height. Leaves ovate to oval, 1.2-5cm long, dark green and rugulose above, whitish beneath with minute glistening scales. Flowers 1-1.5cm across, in terminal clusters to 5cm in diameter, early summer. Seed capsules globose. British Columbia to California, east to Montana and Wyoming, in bogs and wet places at 1200-3600m. L.g. var. columbianum has somewhat longer leaves which are narrower owing to revolute margins. Inflorescences denser and more rounded, seed capsules ovoid. British Columbia to California, in bogs at lower altitudes.
