Rhizomatous and bushy, 1040cm in height. Leaves composed of two linear to narrowly lanceolate leaflets 1.5-7.5cm long, glabrous or slightly downy. Flowers 2.2-2.8cm wide, violet to navy blue, usually with a white keel, two to five in dense racemes, late spring in the wild. Peru, Argentina and Chile as far south as the Lake District in sheltered sites and exposed ridges at 1100-2300m. Similar but more compact is L. pastorei with tawny silky-hairy foliage composed of three to five leaflets and smaller, blue flowers. Northern Argentinian Patagonia at 2250-2800m.
