procumbent perermial with unwinged stems 40-90cm in length. Leaves composed of four to ten elliptic, glaucous-green leaflets with or without tendrils. Flowers 2cm or more across, purple aging bluish, in racemes of two to seven, late spring to late summer. Arctic Europe, on maritime shingle and dunes. L.j. subsp. maritimus has racemes of up to twelve flowers the calyces of which are glabrous; those of japonicus are pubescent. Best in a scree bed but takes up much room.
