Botanical Description

In the wild venerable plants can be 10cm tall by 1m or more across. In cultivation 2-3cm high by 10-15cm across would be an accomplishment. Leaves rosetted, very dense, ovate-oblong, 2-3mm long, somewhat glaucous, grey-hairy, leathery. Flowers solitary, almost sessile, 5-6mm wide formed of five pinkish-white petals, sometimes with a hint of purple, and ten strawberry-red anthers on long pink filaments, spring. Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, on volcanic and limestone cliffs at 1500-3030m. [Pl.235]
