variable. Leaves of juvenile and adult phases often
found together, the latter to about 8mm long, spine-
tipped and glaucous-banded above. Mongolia,
China, Japan, on hill and mountainsides and near
the sea. J.c. var. echiniformis (syn. J. communis
'Echiniformis') forms a small compact globe of leafy shoots which rarely grow more than 1cm per year. J. chinensis var. procumbens, see J. procumbens.
