Botanical Description

from shortly creeping rhizomes, usually 5-8cm tall but sometimes more, in height. Leaves linear, slender-pointed, distinctly arching, bright mid-green. Flowers Sbout 4mm long, chestnut to purple-brown and green, in terminal pairs, each one in the axil of a keeled bract, summer. Circum-arctic south to Scotland and southern Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Kamchatka and the Rocky mountains of North America, in wet, stony places.
