Botanical Description

to 35cm tall, sometimes more. Rhizomes thick and leaves wide (2.5-5cm ). Flowers 8-10cm in diameter, comparatively flat as the standards spread out and the falls are only a little recurved, lilac, with darker blotches and veins, the crests white, sparingly dark spotted, early summer. I.t. 'Alba' is white. Southwest China and widely grown in Japan, often in straw-thatched roofs, sometimes called the Japanese roof iris. Easily grown in a sheltered sunny spot but prone to virus though seedlings start free of this weakening disease.
